Abstract
580,006. Tanks. FARMER, G. H. April 20, 1943, No. 6333. [Class 69 (i)] Relates to fuel &c. tanks for use in aircraft, boats or vehicles when the direction of the total field of acceleration may vary considerably from the normal direction, and comprises the provision of an auxiliary tank within and communicating with a main tank and so arranged that the liquid in it will not be returned to the main tank when the tanks are inverted or the effect of gravity is similarly reversed, e.g. by downward acceleration, an outlet pipe opening into the auxiliary tank near its centre of volume. As shown, the auxiliary tank 10 is mounted to project half above and half below the bottom of the main tank 11 and is fed from the latter through a passage 12, the top of the auxiliary tank having a vent 13 with an inwardly opening non-return valve 14; the mouth of the outlet pipe 15 is level with the bottom of the main tank. The auxiliary tank may be arranged at either the front or rear of the main tank and may be wholly below the main tank. A non-return valve may be inserted in the passage 12 to prevent siphoning on inversion of the tanks, or return flow when the main tank is nearly empty &c.
