Abstract
586,566. Air compressors. BAUMANN, K., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 20. 1942, Nos. 14725/42, 16033/43 and 6990/43. [Class 110 (i)] The fluid flow at the inlet end of an axial flow compressor is subdivided into at least two coaxial streams acted upon by respective sets of co-operating blades. The number of blade rows for passing the inner stream is larger than that of the rows for passing the, or each, outer stream. Two tier blade.rings a, on a rotor A and b<1> on the stator B, Fig. 1, provide two coaxial streams preceding the single tier final stage a<2>, b<2>. The inner stream passes through additional blade rings a0 on the rotor and c on a stationary annular wall C. The entrance og to the outer blade tiers is designed to reduce the velocity of the outer stream. The bladings throughout are designed to keep the Mach figure at or below 0.75. In Fig. 2, the bladings of the inner stream are in front of those of the outer stream. In Fig. 3, single tier blades are used and the stream is subdivided by an annular wall C carrying inner and outer blade rings. The wall C is mounted to.rotate freely. A contra-rotational compressor may be arranged in the manner of Fig. 3 and the wall C may be either stationary or free to rotate.
