Abstract

586,174. Projectiles. JANECEK, F. K. Aug. 6, 1943, No. 16907/44. Divided out of 573,914. [Class 9 (i)] An armour-piercing projectile of the kind in which a core 10 of hard, tough material, such as tungsten carbide, is disposed within a steel sleeve 11 having a nose 13 overlying the forward end of the core, has a metallic cushion 14 of comparatively low specific gravity interposed between the forward end of the core and the nose 13. The cushion may be made of a light alloy, such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Duralumin." In another construction, Fig. 3 (not shown) which is identical with one shown in Specification 573,914, and in which the projectile has a tail-piece, the cushion has ridges or projections which are compressed when the part of the projectile are assembled, and which enable the cushion to be gripped between the core and the sleeve. A somewhat similar modification, in which also the projectile has a tail, and is encircled by a hollow deformable portion, but in which there is no outer sleeve spaced apart from the steel sleeve which closely surrounds the core, is also described and shown.
