Abstract

584,830. Vacuum cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Jan. 26, 1945, No. 2098. Convention date, March 25,1944. [Class 8 (i)] Part of the nozzle of a suction cleaner including a lip is adjustable to bring the brush carried thereby into and out of contact with the carpet to adapt the cleaner to operate by suction only or by combined brushing and suction. Fig. 2 shows a nozzle formed with a bottom plate 58 having a rear wall 60 attachable to the rear lip in either of two positions in which it is held by a nut 67. In the upper position of the plate, the brush bristles project through a hole in the plate, while in the lower position the brush is held above the plate out of contact with the carpet which is cleaned by suction only. The brush carries a coaxial friction disc engaging the wheel flange internally. In a modification, Fig. 8, a nozzle lip bracket 90 carries at its ends arms carrying the brush and wheels, and is slidable by an external lever to adjust the position of the wheels and brush and to vary the nozzle opening. The brush shaft is toothed to engage internal wheel teeth. The wheels are carried in end pockets from which the air is cut off by movable plates. The nozzle is connected to a suction cleaner by a flexible hose.
