Abstract

584,186. Eddy current brakes. TUSTIN, A., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. March 15, 1939, No. 8334. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] An eddy current brake 8, is driven through gearing including a clutch 15 controlled by centrifugal masses so as to slip when the speed at which the brake is driven exceeds a certain value, above which the braking effect becomes independent of the speed. A second eddy current brake 22 is directly driven. The excitation of the brake magnets 9, 11 may be controlled by the field controller 7 of an electric motor being braked so as to vary as the motor field. The torque-speed characteristics resulting from the arrangement are described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
