Abstract
Air is removed from a highly viscous sodium caseinate solution, containing about 25 per cent of casein, which is to be used in a dry spinning process for the production of artificial threads, by raising the temperature of the solution to about 50 DEG C. in a closed vessel having a volume several times that of the solution, reducing the pressure until the solution begins to boil and foam, and continuing the reduction of pressure until the air is substantially completely removed, this stage being indicated by the disappearance of the foam when the pressure is slightly increased. In view of the large capacity of the vessel, the foam which is produced during the earlier part of the treatment is unable to foul the outlet for the air. When the boiling begins, the air bubbles act as a nucleus for vapour formation and the larger bubbles which are formed burst sooner when they reach the surface. After some time, the foam starts to break down and the vacuum may be increased. In an example, sodium caseinate is dissolved in dilute caustic soda and the solution is placed in a vessel having a capacity of about 6 times that of the solution. The solution is heated to 50 DEG C. and the pressure is reduced to 16 centimetres of mercury. As the foam subsides, the vacuum is increased until the solution is completely freed of air.
