Abstract

Heat - convertible, soluble, fusible partial polymers are prepared by heating a solution of p or m-divinyl benzene in a p- or m-dialkyl benzene having at least two carbon atoms in each alkyl group, in the presence of both a catalyst and an inhibitor of polymerization for a period less than that required to cause gellation. The partial polymer may be precipitated by the addition of a non-solvent, e.g. methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol or glycol, or by evaporation of the solvent. Suitable catalysts are ozone, ozonides, hydrogen, barium, sodium, acetyl, lauryl, stearyl, benzoyl, acetone, triacetone, diethyl, ethyl hydrogen and acetylbenzoyl peroxides, perborates, persulphates, perchlorates, aluminium chloride, methacrylic and hydrofluoric acids, cobalt and manganese resinates, linoleates and maleates. Suitable inhibitors are copper, sulphur, aniline, diphenylamine, naphthylamine, phenols, cresols, xylenols, naphthols, aminophenols and aminonaphthols. In the example, p- or m-divinyl benzene dissolved in p-diethyl benzene, benzoyl peroxide and freely reduced copper gauge are refluxed for 30 minutes and the viscous solution poured into methanol. The precipitated polymer was soluble in toluene, ethyl acetate, ethylene dichloride, styrene and methyl methacrylate.
