Abstract

Polyethylene is prepared in powder form by dissolving it, at elevated temperature, in a solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon, in which it is soluble to a considerable extent at such elevated temperature, but substantially insoluble at lower temperatures, and then cooling to solution to such lower temperature. Solution is preferably effected near the boiling point of the solvent and cooling effected rapidly by applied cooling means. The precipitated powder is separated, e.g. by filtering and dried at elevated temperature insufficient to cause softening. A fine powder is obtained by tumbling the separated powder in a machine provided with an exhaust for the liquid vapour, heat being applied, if desired. An example, using petroleum spirit as solvent, is given. The powder may be used for moulding in presses or injection machines, or, in a spray pistol, to produce films.
