Abstract

Dimethylaniline is made by reaction of methyl alcohol and aniline in vapour form at 200-230 DEG C. and in presence of a catalyst consisting of or containing precipitated alumina supported on calcined bauxite. Air is preferably excluded from the apparatus. An example is given of a catalyst composed of granular Indian bauxite calcined at 450-500 DEG C,, with which is incorporated an aqueous paste of precipitated aluminium hydroxide (prepared by the action of aqueous ammonia on a solution of aluminium sulphate in the cold).
