Abstract

576,683. Bombs. DOUGLAS, G. P. July 29, 1932, No. 21444. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] An aerial bomb, more particularly bombs floatable in water, comprises a streamlined false nose of low drag which disintegrates under pressure of water, through a pitot tube 7 near the centre of the nose, to uncover the nose proper which has a greater drag, in order to limit the depth to which the bomb sinks in water before rising again towards the surface. This depth at which the nose breaks is controlled by adjusting the size of the pitot orifice. The nose is formed of two or more parts 3, bevelled at 4. The inner end of the pitot orifice 7 fits round a centre block 6. The nose is made of wood or aluminium and is attached by easily frangible pins &c. The interior of the nose may be filled with grease. Modifications are shown in which on disintegration the parts of the nose hinge about fulcra between the outer edge and the centre of the nose proper, and also in which the parts slide on the nose proper.
