Abstract

563,909. Couplings. FOSTER TRANSFORMERS & SWITCHGEAR, Ltd., and LOWE, R. GRETTON-. Jan. 14, 1943, No. 723. [Class 38 (i)] A clamp for coupling a cable or conductor to another conductor, switch, &c. comprises a base having a groove to receive the conductor end, and a clamping-member having wedgeshaped surfaces engaging recesses in the base to form a pivot transverse to the conductor and a screw for pressing the clamping-member into engagement with the conductor. In one form, the base 1, Fig. 1, carries a switch contact 6 and has a grooved extension 2 to receive the cable end 5, upstanding lugs at each side of the extension having recesses 2a to receive wedge-shaped pivot surfaces 3a on the clamping-member 3. A screw 4 presses down the clamping-member so that a cannon spike 3b thereon engages the cable end. Where two conductors 13, 14, Fig. 2, are involved, the clamping-member 11 may be associated with a clamping member 10 that may be shaped to accommodate the transverse conductor 13 and the two clamping-members may overlap so as to be capable of actuation by a single screw 12. The base 9 has two grooved formations for the conductors and lugs 9a, 9b recessed to receive the wedge-shaped pivot surfaces 10a, 11a. These are pressed in place by the reaction of abutting surfaces 10c, 11c on the members 10, 11. A similar pair of reaction surfaces may be provided on a single clamping-member and the base at the end opposite the pivot. The gripping surfaces may be serrated and that on the clamping-member may be grooved or channeled to fit round the conductor.
