Abstract

562,552. Lubricating grease compositions. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Oct. 29, 1942, No. 15179. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1941. [Class 91] An' anhydrous, water-insoluble, temperature stable and reversible grease comprises a mixture of mineral lubricating oil, aluminium soap and a non-basic barium soap. The proportion of the total soap in the finished compositions ranges from 5 to 40 per cent by weight, and the ratio of the barium soap to the aluminium soap varies between 1 to 1 and 10 to 1 and preferably 5 to 1. The mineral lubricating oil is generally a base oil of viscosity 50 to 220 at 210‹ F. S.S.U., and preferably of viscosity 100 to 2400 at 100‹ F. S.S.U. The soaps may be prepared from the usual fats or fatty acids including fatty acids split from hydrogenated fish oils which contain at least 9 carbon atoms to the molecule. The barium soaps are preferably made by using a more active hydrated barium oxide obtained by reacting barium oxide and water in an inert atmosphere, such as in the presence of a mineral lubricating oil, a smooth emulsion of hydrated barium oxide in oil being obtained. The soaps may be prepared separately before compounding, or in the case of the barium soap, the fat or fatty acid may be mixed with the mineral oil and then saponified, the hydrated barium oxide being in stoichiometrical or slightly less proportions. The compositions may contain other additives, such as anti-oxidants.
