Abstract

561,765. Piles. BELL, N. G. Feb. 19, 1943, No. 2818. [Class 68 (ii)] A hollow interlocking pile intended to be driven by means of a pile hammer driving on top of the pile or internally at the bottom, is formed as a continuous wall affording a hollow cylinder open at both ends and is provided with external longitudinal members for laterally interlocking with those of adjacent piles. The Figure shows an arrangement in which the pile is driven by an internal hammer 4, which may be of the type disclosed in Specification 550,492, striking a shoe 5 which draws the pile down by friction set up by wedges 6. A casing 7 excludes water and dirt. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the shoe rests on a plug of dry concrete, gravel or the like. The interlocking members may be of any type and the tubes may be indented or corrugated to attain strength. The piles may be subsequently filled with concrete. The Provisional Specification also describes means for grouting the interlocks for watertightness and the provision of fins for bonding to concrete and means for, effecting the driving and extraction. Portions of the pile may be thickened for strength and jet holes may be provided for water jetting. An enlarged base may be formed by an explosive charge or otherwise and filled with concrete with reinforcing.
