561,633. Measuring angles. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO, LTD, and 561,633. Measuring angles. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and MOON, J. H. Nov. 23, 1942, No. 16567. [Class 97 (ii)] Relates to an angle-measuring instrument particularly for use on aircraft for checking the 'accuracy of the compass and of the radio - direction finder. It comprises two co-planar mirrors Mt, Mh, one of which, Mt, is stationarily mounted on a base such as a bridge BP, Fig. 3, carried by a lid'L of a box, while the other, Mh, is rotatable on an axis coincident with the median line of the stationary mirror. As shown, the mirror Mh is carried by a bracket B from' a sleeve C<1> carried by the bridge BP, while the other mirror Mt is mounted on a spindle S<1>which is geared to a dial D, scale, cursor, or the like so that it indicates double the angle through which the mirror Mt is rotated. Datum marks Dh, Ds may be provided on the device. Fig. 1 shows the use of the device for checking the angle to the radio-direction bearing. With the aeroplane placed' in one position a mark or stake h is set out on the ground in the longitudinal axis of the plane; another stake is set out on the ground in the radio-beam. The device is turned as a whole until an image of the mark h is obtained in mirror Mh and mirror Mt is then rotated until the image of the stake t is obtained in the mirror Mt in alignment with' the image' of the mark h in the mirror Mh. In the example, the mirror will have been rotated through 140 degrees, the reading on the dial D being therefore 280 degrees, the complementary angle 80 degrees of which represents the bearing of the radio beam to the longitudinal axis of the plane. Fig. 5 shows a modification embodying a cursor DFC, a dial D and a second dial AS whereby both compass and radio beam bearings may be checked, the stationary mirror Mh in this case being below the rotatable mirror Mt, which mirrors show the images of the respective marks or stakes.
