Abstract

561,236. Brakes. A.C.E. MACHINERY. Ltd., and EVANS, P. N. June 2, 1942, No. 7472. [Class 103 (i)] A brake drum is arranged to be moved to engage the inner surface thereof with a spring- loaded brake shoe which is permitted limited tangential movement to provide a wedging action whereby the drum is rapidly stopped. The movement of the drum may also disengage it from a driving pinion. The brake drum a is freely mounted upon a shaft b carried by eccentric bearings s in a fixed support h. The brake shoe c is carried by an arm d mounted on a pivot f extending between side parts q of a bracket g fixed to the support h. The shoe is urged towards the drum by a spring e and is normally held in an adjustable position spaced from the drum by a screw l. By a part rotation of the bearings s the drum engages the shoe which is then carried along the pivot to an extent determined by clearance between the shoe and the adjacent side part q to produce a wedging action. The drum has a driving connection with the apparatus under control and the eccentric bearings s may be turned in either direction from the position in which the brake is applied to engage the drum with one or the other of two oppositely rotating friction driving pinions as described in Specification 561,235, [Group XXIV], so as to drive the drum in either direction.
