[Classes 81 (i) and 81 (ii)] A surgical dressing comprises a wet pad 1 of gauze, lint, &c., saturated with a composition containing glycerin, an anµsthetic and an antiseptic substance, and hermetically sealed within an impervious envelope 2, e.g. of rubber hydrochloride. In use, the envelope 2 is cut or opened by a rip-cord, the pad extracted and applied to the wound, burn, &c., being then covered by the outer envelope and held in place by bandages. The dressings may be made by placing saturated pads at spaced intervals between two webs of rubber hydrochloride, heat-sealing the webs together around the pads, e.g. at 3 and 5, and then cutting the individually sealed packages apart. In a modified form, the envelope 2 is attached to an adhesive backing 8, Fig. 8, the adhesive 9 being protected, before use, by layers of fabric 10, 11. To use the dressing in this form, the layers of fabric 10, 11 are removed, the envelope 2 opened along the line 12, the pad removed and applied to the wound, burn, &c., the envelope placed over the pad and the whole held in place on the patient by the adhesive backing 8. The pad may be formed so that it can be opened to cover double its-original area before applying the adhesive backing over it. Examples of the anµsthetic and antiseptic substances used are chlorbutanol, benzyl and salicylic alcohols, quinoline and piperidine derivatives, &c., and sulphanilamide, boroglycerin, &c. The preferred saturating composition is, by weight, as follows :-sulphanilamide 7, chlorbutanol 5, oxyquinoline sulphate 2, boroglycerin 21 and glycerin 65 parts. This composition may be applied to the pad as a salve absorbed in diatomite, kaolin, &c.
