Abstract

568,263. Spring forks for motorcycles. SMITH, E.G., and DUKE, A. G. April 1, 1943, No. 5227. [Class 136 (iii)] Each blade or limb of a motorcycle front wheel fork consists of a fixed upper tube 1 in which a lower tube 4, supporting one end of the wheel axle, is slidable against the action of load and rebound springs 14, 10 which surround a rod 9 depending from the upper end of the fixed tube 1, the load spring 14 being arranged within the fixed tube 1 between an adjusting nut 13 on the rod 9 and the top of the tube 4, and the rebound spring 10 within the tube 4 between the top of the tube and an abutment on the lower end of the rod. Each spring 10 is adjustable by a plug 8 closing the top of the tube 4 which is guided in the tube 1 by a fabric or fibre bush 5 preferably containing graphite. The tubes 1 are rigidly secured or adjustably clamped to members 2, 3 mounted on the steering column, and the tubes 4 may be connected together by a member sliding in slots in the tubes 1.
