Abstract
A process for the preparation of synthetic materials which comprises copolymerizing, in aqueous emulsion, sulphur-modified polychloroprenes with one or more polymiscible methacrylic compounds. Many starting materials, polymerization catalysts and dispersing agents are specified. Examples are given of the preparation of (1) methyl methacrylate; (2) ethyl methacrylate; (3) isobutyl methacrylate; (4) methyl methacrylate/m-butyl methacrylate; (5) methacrylic anhydride; (6) 2-nitro-2-methyl-propyl methacrylate; (7) methalkyl methacrylate; and (8) methacrylonitrile. The copolymers may be isolated by precipitation or coagulation, and the finished products range from soft and elastic to tough balata-like solids. They may be compounded with plasticizers, stabilisers, pigments, dyes, fillers, softeners, oils, natural resins, synthetic resins, or synthetic rubber prepared from butadiene or isoprene, or from interpolymers of these dienes with other vinyl compounds, and used, e.g. in the preparation of coating and impregnating compositions and adhesives. Plasticizers mentioned are thiuram disulphides, especially tetra - alkyl thiuram disulphides, thionapthols, and the substituted ammonium salts of disubstituted dithio-carbamic acid. Polymerization catalysts are used and include inorganic peroxygen compounds such as perdi-sulphates, perphosphates, percarbonates and perborates. Polymerization may be carried out in an atmosphere of nitrogen or methane. Specifications 7137/13, [Class 2 (iii)], and 529,839 are referred to.
