Abstract
566,087. Starting and stopping machinery. HORDERN, MASON, & EDWARDS, Ltd., EDWARDS, W. G., and DEYKIN, R. F. March 26, 1943, No. 4893. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to combined brake and clutch mechanism for presses and the like in which pressure fluid under the control of a single valve simultaneously engages the clutch and releases the brake. According to the invention, an additional valve permits disengagement of the clutch when the brake is in its released position. As shown, a loose pulley 14 driven by a power unit 11 may be clutched to a power press shaft 15 by a clutch 16. The shaft 15 may also be braked by brake levers 23 urged' in the engaging direction by a spring 31 and disengaged by pressure-fluid operated piston and cylinder mechanism 34. Fluid pressure, under control of a valve 25, enters a pipe 27 and simultaneously engages the clutch and releases the brake. To enable the clutch to be released with the brake still disengaged, an auxiliary'valve 36 is inserted in the fluidpressure pipe leading to the clutch. The valve ports 39, 40, 41 in the valve are connected respectively to the pipe 27, to the pipe 42 leading to the clutch and to a pipe 45 leading to exhaust. The valve plug 37 is arranged to connect either ports 39, 40 to engage the clutch or ports 40, 41 to disengage the clutch.
