Abstract

553,728. Specula &c. LIER, L. V. April 21, 1942, No. 5345. [Class 81 (ii)] A specula or like surgical instrument having a part formed of light-transmitting material detachably carried by a handle incorporating a source of light, has a surface protector band on that portion of the light-transmitting member which is engageable by the handle socket and adapted and arranged for secure engagement into such socket. As shown the light-transmitting member 11 forming the shank of one of the duck-bills of the instrument has a band 12 pegged or screwed thereto with a skirt 14 having a circumferential groove 15 freely slidable in the handle socket 16; a grub screw 17, with a head 18 and a locking nut device 19, extends through the socket into the groove 15. In another form the band has a threaded skirt engaging the handle socket and in a further form the skirt has open L-shaped bayonet slots engaging the inner end of pins projecting from the socket; in this case a spring may be provided to assist in maintaining effective engagement between the pins and slots and the socket may carry a screwed locking pin engaging the skirt of the band. The other duck-bill may also be formed of light-transmitting material e.g. methyl methacrylate resin. Specification 540,806 is referred to.
