Abstract
551,496. Screw-and-nut gearing. BURMAN & SONS, Ltd., BRIGGS, T. H., and BRIGGS, W. H. July 23, 1941, No. 9313. [Class 80 (iii)] Relates to screw-and-nut gearing and particularly to vehicle steering mechanism embodying such gearing which is of the kind wherein balls engage the threads of the screw and nut. A short shaft a secured to the steering shaft has a helical V-groove b. At one side.of this shaft is mounted a nut member d which subtends about one-half of the shaft and slides along a rod f. The nut member also has a helical groove e and opposite it is arranged a ball-retaining member g which subtends the remainder of the shaft, is secured by screws I to the member d, and is formed with an inclined groove h. The grooves e, h accommodate a ring of balls i. The groove h has its ends located immediately 'opposite the ends of the groove e and therefore crosses over the helix of the shaft a where its depth is increased to enable the balls to pass over the outer surface of the shaft. A lever j connected to the nut by a ball m and groove n actuates the rockshaft k. In a modification, two or more rings of balls are used, the nut member having two or more widely spaced grooves e. Specification 490,938 is referred to.
