[Class 46] An oil filter is provided with a primary filtering element 39, constructed to filter the total quantity of oil flowing from a primary circuit, and a secondary filter element 51, constructed to filter to a finer degree part of the oil which has passed through the element 39 and which is thereafter bypassed through a secondary circuit. As shown, the filters 39, 51 are separated by a perforated partition 24 in an apertured spring-pressed container 20 secured by a cover 2 and a bolt 4 in a casing 1 having flanged bosses 7, 8 for bolting to the crank case of an engine. Oil entering through an inlet 9 is filtered by the element 39, the greater part of the filtered oil passing through a tube 26, a passage 12 and an outlet 10 leading to bearings to be lubricated and the remainder through the filter 51, holes 28 in a cover plate 27 and passages 32, 33, 35 in the cover 2 to an outlet 31, fitted with an apertured disc 37 and leading to the oil sump. A bypass valve unit 17 opens to permit unfiltered oil to pass from the casing 1 through an opening 16 to the passage 12 when the pressure difference between the inlet 9 and outlet 10 exceeds a predetermined value. The filter 39 comprises a tapered felt &c. bag 40 folded over perforated metal spacing members and the filter 51 a filtering medium 45, such as cotton linters, between perforated rings 52 of V-section.
