Abstract
550,645. Moulding optical elements. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). July 9, 1941, No. 8680. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] A composite optical element comprises a lenticular element made from a plastic mouldable at a low temperature, or from a substance capable of being gelatinized from solution, adhering to a glass or non-plastic inorganic element, and is made by filling the plastic &c. material into a die having the glass &c. element as one boundary ; the plastic material may be applied to one or both sides of the glass element, and adherence may be spontaneous or by the use of an adhesive. The glass element may have plane or spherical surfaces and the exposed surface of the plastic may be aspherical ; the composite element may be a spherical mirror and an adherent corrector for spherical aberration, or may be a supporting plate and corrector at the centre of curvature of a spherical mirror. The Figure shows a polystyrol correction element 9 on a lens 5 mounted in an objective barrel 8 so as to be protected from damage by lens 5 and lens 6. An element gelatinized from solution may be formed as described in Specification 550,644, and may be desiccated and hardened as described therein ; gelatine, agaragar, pectin, or silicates or alumina, with or without glycerine, may be used.
