Abstract
559,431. Screw conveyers. McKEAN, J. G. Aug. 21, 1942, No. 11787. [Class 78 (i)] Coupling means for connecting in axial alignment two conveyer or like screws each including a shaft or tube 1 or 2 provided with a spiral blade 3 or 4, comprises a socket joint between the shafts, one screw being driven from the other only through the spiral blades. As shown, the coupling means comprises a tube 5 also having a spiral blade 6 which is continued beyond the ends of the tube 5 to an extent equal to that by which the blades 3, 4 terminate short of steps 7 formed by reducing the ends 8 of the shafts 1, 2, for insertion in the coupling tube 5, so that when the parts are assembled the end faces 10 of the blade 6 abut the end faces 9 of the blades 3, 4, and the driving force is transmitted only through the blades. The coupling tube and blade may be welded or otherwise secured to or formed integral with the shaft and blade respectively of one of the screws to be coupled.
