559,024. Iodine compounds. BOOTS PURE DRUG CO., Ltd., OXLEY, P., and SHORT, W. F. Aug. 31, 1942, No. 12257. [Class 2 (iii)] Iodo derivatives of α#-diphenylpropionic acids in which at least one of the phenyl groups is substituted in the para position by an OH group are obtained by iodinating the acids with the use of iodine, e.g. a solution of iodine in a solution of alkali iodide, in the presence of ammonia. The ammonium salts of the iodinated acids are salted out from solution and recrystallized from glacial acetic acid to give the pure acids. Examples are x-phenyl- #-(4-hydroxy-3, 5-diiodophenyl) propionic acid from α - phenyl - # - p hydroxyphenvlpropionic acid, α#-di-(3, 5-diiodo-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionic acid from α#-di (4-hydroxyphenyl)- propionic acid and α-(3, 5-diiodo-4-hydroxyphenyl)-#-phenylpropionic acid from α-4- hydroxyphenyl-#-phenylpropionic acid. α#-di (4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionic acid is prepared by condensing p-methoxyphenylacetic acid with anisaldehyde, reducing the α#-di-panisylacrylic acid to α#-di-p-anisyl-propionic acid and demethylating. α-4-Hydroxyphenyl-#-phenylpropionic acid is prepared by condensing p-methoxyphenylacetic acid with benzaldehyde to form α-anisyl-#- phenylacrylic acid which is reduced and demethylated.
