Abstract
557,130. Measuring cubic contents. AKTIEBOLAGET NORDISKA ARMATURFABRIKERNA. Dec. 16, 1941, No. 16228. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1940. [Class 106 (i)] A device for determining the volume of liquid or air or gas space in a receptacle connected by an equalizing pipe with the atmosphere or an auxiliary chamber comprises a source of pressure for producing a certain difference between the gas pressure in the receptacle and the atmospheric pressure or the gas pressure in the auxiliary chamber, a time meter and a manometer so arranged that when the difference of pressure progresses during a certain period of time, the final value of the difference of pressure measured by the manometer is a measure of the volume of air in the receptacle. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the receptacle 1 is connected by a pipe 8 to one limb of a differential manometer 7, by a pipe 10 with a stop valve 11 and needle valve 12 to an auxiliary chamber 5, and by a pipe 14 with a stop valve 15 to a source of pressure 13 which may by an air pump. The chamber 5 is also connected to the manometer by a pipe 9 and to the source of pressure by a branch pipe 16 with a stop valve 17. A time meter 6 is arranged near the manometer and may be started and stopped automatically by means connected to the manometer. In operation the valve 11 is closed and the valve 15 or 17 opened to the source of pressure until a certain difference of pressure is established between the receptacle and chamber as shown by the manometer. The needle valve 12 having been adjusted the valve 15 or 17 is now closed and the valve 11 opened so that the pressure difference is gradually reduced and the time which elapses until this difference reaches a fixed value is measured by the time meter which may be graduated in units of volume. If the difference of pressure has a definite initial value and is reduced during a fixed period, the final value of the pressure on the manometer is a measure of the volume. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the receptacle is connected to the atmosphere by means of an equalizing pipe 18 with a needle valve 19, to a manometer 20 by the pipe 21 and to the source of pressure by a pipe 22 with a stop valve 23. In another form, Fig. 3 (not shown), a diaphragm device is arranged between the receptacle and a stop valve in the equalizing pipe so as to control the valve and thereby compensate for variations in the atmospheric pressure and temperature. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification as applied to the tank of an aeroplane. In this arrangement, Fig. 4 (Cancelled), a pressure chamber is connected with the atmosphere in such manner that the pressure therein is the same as that of the atmosphere, and is connected by means of an equalizing pipe with the tank and by means of an equalizing pipe with an auxiliary chamber. Two manometer are connected by pipes to the tank, the auxiliary chamber and the pressure chamber are so arranged that one indicates a change of atmospheric pressure and the other a change in the volume of air in the tank. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
