Abstract
556,478. Aircraft wings. FLETCHER, O. E., MURRAY, E. A., and EVANS, A. E. April, 4 1942, No. 4520. [Class 4] In a folding wing arrangement the wings are mounted on a vertical pivot or pivots on the upper part of the fuselage or a rigid superstructure thereon and the trailing section of the wing is hinged to the leading section so as to fold over thereon, the arrangement being such that when the wings are turned back abut'the vertical pivots the rear edge of the leading section of one wing extends closely alongside that of the other wing. In Fig. 1, each wing 3 is provided with a trailer section arranged to fold on to the leading section and comprising an independently operable aileron 4 and flap 5. The wing is pivoted at 8 to a superstructure 6 provided on the fuselage 1 and constituting a centre section of the wing structure. The wings are secured in the extended position by locking devices 9. In a modification, for a flying boat in which the engine and propeller are mounted on a pylon extending above a superstructure of the hul such as 6, the inner edges 7 of the wings lie closely alongside each other in the extended position and the wings are pivoted to the superstructure at points on the wings corresponding to those of the locking devices 9 of Fig. 1. Bracing struts may extend from a mid-wing position of the wings to the lower part of the fuselage and may be pivotally mounted or detachable at the lower extremities to permit of the folding movement of the wings. Struts may also extend from the wings to the pylon.
