Abstract

555,563. Platinum alloys; coatine with metals, STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., Aug. 28, 1942, No. 12136. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1941. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] To reduce conduction losses through the leads of a thermistor they are made of an alloy having an abnormally low Wiedsmann-Franz ratio. which is defined as KP/T, where K is the thermal conductivity in watt-centimetre-‹C units, P is resistivity, and T the absolute temperature. Suitable alloys are those containing combinations of platinum, palladium, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium and osmium, for example, 20-30 per cent. iridium, or 2 per cent. of copper or iron may be added to platinum, these alloys having higher resistivity, but lower thermal conductivity, than pure metals. The outer layer of the thermistor may be of platinum, gold or silver applied, for example, by chemical deposition. Thus a "bright" solution, such as gold bright comprising gold chloride and oils of rosemary and lavender, may be applied, the device being heated to 800‹C. to change the material to the metallic state.
