Abstract
542,840. Valves. DILL MANUFACTURING CO. June 8, 1940, No. 10054. Convention date, June 16, 1939. [Class 135] [Also in Group XI] A torch or blowpipe for cutting or welding metals is fitted with means for automatically regulating the pressures and with flexible disc valves for controlling the flow of oxygen and fuel gas. In the torch shown the oxygen and fuel gas are supplied through conduits 13, 14 to counter-bores 19, 24 in the handle body 10 fitted with rubber disc valves 27 having central enlargements 29 which can be operated to close or open passages 22, 26 leading to grooves 23, 25 by means of plungers engaged by cams 34 on a shaft 32 provided with an operating lever 36. The valves 27 have beaded edges 28 pressed against enlargements of the counter-bores 19, 24 by a block 31 in which the shaft 32 is mounted. The lever 36 is held in the open and closed position by a spring-pressed detent ball engaging recesses in the handle body. The grooves 23, 25 are covered with sheet packing 40 secured by plates 42, 43 to form passages through which the oxygen and fuel gas pass to recesses 44, 46 in the handle body fitted with pressure regulating. valves comprising centrally bored posts 55, Fig. 6, slidable in bushings 47 and formed with openings 57, 58. The posts 55 are secured at their upper ends to cups 51 carried by diaphragms. The pressure of the gases on the cups 51 is resisted by springs 60 engaging nuts 61 adjustable in plates 52 closing the upper ends of the diaphragms. The oxygen and fuel gas on leaving the recesses 44, 46 pass through passages 64, 66 in the handle body and tubes 84 to passages 94, 95 leading to a mixing chamber in the torch head consisting of a circular bore 96 closed at the ends by screw plugs 97, Fig. 8, and fitted with a mixing member. The mixing member consists of ported discs 101 supported in the plugs 97 and carrying a baffle plate 102. The head C carries the tip or nozzle D which comprises an inner member 110 screwing into a counter-bore 105 in the head and fitting in an outer member 119 secured in a larger counterbore 107 in the head by a nut 122. The upper portion of the member 110 has a concave polygonal periphery 116 anl the lower portion has a tapered periphery formed with longitudinal grooves 118. The mixing chamber communicates with the space between the members 110, 119 by a passage 104. High pressure oxygen for cutting purposes passes from the conduit 13 through a groove 21 in the handle body to a rubber disc valve 73 controlled by a plunger 79 engaging a leaf-spring 78 flexed by a handlever 77. From the valve 73 the oxygen passes through a tube 84 to a passage 93 in the head C leading to a central bore 114, 115 in the member 110. The tubes 84 carry sleeves 87 formed with ribs 88 engaging a bracket plate 89 which is secured by screws to the body 10 so as to enable the plate 89, tubes 84: and the head C to be removed from the body 10 as a unit. The orifices in the packing members 82 between the tubes 84 may be formed as metering orifices.
