Abstract

541,888. Agglutinated fibrous materials. BRITISH CELANESE. Ltd. June 14, 1940, No. 10356. Convention date, June 24, 1939. [Class 140] Felt-like materials are made by subjecting a mixture of thermoplastic cellulose derivative and non-thermoplastic fibres to heat and pressure to cause the thermoplastic fibres to soften and bind the fibres together under such conditions that the cellulose derivative remains in the fibrous form. The thermoplastic fibres may be of cellulose esters, mixed esters or ethers and may contain plasticizers. They may be treated with an electrolyte prior to carding to reduce the building up of electrostatic charges, weighted with tin, tungsten, zinc or antimony compounds or curled or crinkled as described in Specifications 372,323 and 458,038, [both in Group IV]. Suitable non- thermoplastic fibres are cotton, regenerated cellulose or wool. The mixture of fibres may be carded to form a fleece-like web which is subjected to a temperature of 300‹F. and a pressure of 10001b. per square inch by calender rollers or platen presses. A plurality of superposed carded webs may be similarly treated.
