Abstract
541,570. Catalytic hydrogenation. JOHN, A. R., JOHN, C., and LANCASTER, H. F. June 6, 1940, No. 9907. [Class 1 (i)] Liquid to be hydrogenated is heated and intimately mixed .with gaseous hydrogen whereupon it is passed through an externally heated reaction pipe or a system of such pipes in parallel, while further hydrogen is introduced in a number of streams transverse to the flow of liquid. The liquid returns to the feed tank and may be recycled. As shown in Fig. 1, the liquid is heated by a steam coil 22 in a tank 21, from which it is passed by pump 20 and pipes 19, 17 to the reaction tubes 5 down which it flows back to the tank. Hydrogen is mixed with the heated liquid by injector 18, and a further supply is admitted by pipe 25 and ring 9 to perforated tubes 8 which extend through the re-action tubes. The catalyst preferably consists of roughened thin wire of nickel or of nickelpalladium alloy and may be in the form of a roll of wire netting or it may be formed into a helical brush 57 on a twisted wire core 58.
