Abstract
546,406. Hydrocarbons. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. April 19, 1940, No. 7066. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1939. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 4, 1940.] [Class 2 (iii)] In a process for the alkylation of isoparaffins with ethylene in the presence of a catalyst consisting of water saturated with boron trifluoride, the mixture treated contains an excess of ethylene over the equimolecular proportions of ethylene and isoparaffins. Other olefines may be present in the mixture, such as those in a C 3 , C 4 or C 5 cut, provided that there is an excess of ethylene over the equimolecular proportion. In an example a mixture of isobutane and ethylene in the proportion of 0.65 : 1 is treated. Specification 540,459 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not restricted to the alkylation of isoparaffins with ethylene, but includes the alkylation of paraffin hydrocarbons containing at least one tertiary carbon atom with olefines in general in any proportions. In examples mixtures of (1) isopentane and di-isobutylene, (2) isobutane and propylene and (3) isobutane and ethylene in the molecular proportion of 1.6 : 1 are treated with saturated aqueous solutions of boron trifluoride. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
