545,090. Tubular members of fibrous material. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and N ORTH, J. D. Nov. 22, 1940, No. 16827. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Groups V and XXXIII] Tubes or other hollow members, such as aircraft fuselages, planes and control surfaces are composed of an outer smooth shell 6 and an inner liner 4 having corrugations of flattened form, both composed of impregnated fibrous material, the structure being formed by compression under heat between a core 2 and an outer mould 1, with interposed wedges 3, 5 as shown. The core 2 may consist of an inflated bag, or a tapered core pressed axially may be used, the outer mould being then correspondingly tapered. The material consists of thin layers of wood, paper, fabric, felt &c. impregnated with a thermo-setting plastic material such as a phenol-formaldehyde condensation product, or with a thermo-plastic material such as a polyvinyl ester or co-polymer of vinyl esters. When made of fabric the shell 6 may be formed by winding a length of fabric. The heating may be effected by steam tubes or electrical heating-elements in or surrounding the mould, or by inflating the bag with hot gas. In aerofoils, the corrugations may become smaller towards the trailing edge, which is rounded sufficiently to permit of the continuation of the corrugations.
