Abstract
533,988. Coking process and apparatus. SHAWINIGAN CHEMICALS, Ltd. Dec. 5, 1939, No. 31470. Convention date, Dec. 5, 1938. [Class 55 (i)] A shallow bed of coal is conveyed through a carbonizing zone in an oven which is first heated by combustion of the coal, and, when it has reached a suitable temperature, the charge is coked by selective combustion of a portion of the volatiles given off, the combustion of the charge itself being reduced to a minimum. Coal from a hopper 17 is fed under an adjustable gate 14 to an endless chain grate 12 on which it is conveyed through an oven A having a ceiling 8 to 18 inches above the grate. Air is admitted through ducts 22 and inlets 20 to zones 21, 21a, 21b below the grate and for heating the oven, the fuel is burned to ash. At between 800‹ and 1400‹C. the grate is speeded up, and the air supply adjusted to burn a portion of the volatiles so as to provide heat for driving off the remainder. The gases evolved pass to an outlet 11, and the coke to a hopper 18.
