Abstract

531,112. Sterilizing water. ENGEL, W. July 12, 1939, No. 20243. [Class 49] [Also in Groups XI and XIII] An electric water heater comprises a casing A containing a pair of U-shaped immersion heaters F mounted in a closure disc E. The heaters consist of a helical coil of resistance wire H surrounded by powdered magnesium oxide I. The terminals J are contained in an insulating casing K having an insulating cover L retained by a earthing terminal N. The space around the heaters F is filled with a metallic mass O having capillary channels, made from a mixture of metal particles and a synthetic plastic which contracts on setting, as described in Specification 482,711, [Group IV]. Liquid to be heated flows upwards through the mass. The metal particles may be coated with silver to obtain a germicidal effect. The mass itself may constitute an electric resistance heater, or the current may be induced by induction. The casing may be heated by gas, oil, or solid fuel, and the liquid may be passed through a concentric series of such metallic masses in series. The heating elements F may be replaced by cooling tubes. Heating or cooling elements need not be used. Steam under pressure may be passed through the metallic mass to condense the steam and provide hot water. The porous metallic mass may be produced by moulding particles of copper or copper and tin under pressure and heating in a reducing atmosphere to a temperature just below melting.
