Abstract
530,388. Landing aircraft. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., Sir W. G., and LLOYD, J. June 10, 1939, No. 17060. [Class 4] The rear wheels 12 of a tricycle-type undercarriage, which, in the landing position are at a lower level than that of a front wheel of ordinary construction, are mounted on rigid cranked members 22 the main parts of which are pivoted at 24 to the aeroplane and are vertical when in the landing position. A two-stage oleo leg 25 is pivoted intermediate the ends of each member at 23, and to the framework at a point 26 abcve the pivot 24. When landing contact is made, wing flaps 40 arranged to produce lift are replaced by upwardly directed flaps 41 to produce pressure on the tyres so as to obtain the maximum braking effect. When the full landing pressure is exerted on the tyres, the members 22 occupy the position shown in dotted lines. During landing, the line of pressure cf the wheels passes from a position 31 in front of the centre of gravity 30 to a position 32 well behind it. The distance 38 represents the vertical movement of the aercplane during landing and includes the distance afforded by the squashing of the tyres of the wheels 12. The second stage of the oleo legs is used to retract the wheels into the engine " eggs " 16 where they are enclosed by doors 35. Specifications 463,401, 530,386 and 530,387 are referred to.
