Abstract

538,988. Determining dimensions of materials; resistance measurements ; compensating for temperature errors. URMENYI, L. Feb. 12, 1940, No. 2690. [Class 37] In apparatus for measuring the thickness of foil or sheet metal by placing it between a primary coil excited by A.C. and a secondary coil and measuring the alteration of the secondary voltage due to eddy currents in the foil, changes in the temperature of the foil are compensated for by measuring the temperature of the foil electrically and correspondingly altering a compensating current or voltage. This is effected by an additional displacement of the regulating member by which the apparatus can be set for any foil thickness. As shown in Fig. 1 a resistance 16 of copper or other material of high temperature coefficient and resistances 14, 15, 17, 20 of material of low temperature coefficient such as constantan are arranged in a bridge circuit fed with A.C. from a transformer 34. The resistance 16 is placed near the foil to be measured. The sliding contact 24 of the resistance 17 is regulated by a reversible motor 21 so as to balance the bridge. The sliding contact 24 and the opposite carrier 23 of the bridge are connected through an amplifier 40 to the rotor of the motor 21, the stator being fed from the transformer 34. The regulating member 10, Fig. 2, consists of a metal screen movable between two coils, of which one, 1, is shown, by means of worm gear 25, 36. Its position is indicated on a scale 26 calibrated in foil thickness. A switch 39 is simultaneously operated by gearing 33 and regulates resistances 19, 191, 19<2> in parallel with sections of the resistance 17 and a parallel resistance 18. If the temperature of the foil being measured varies the resistance 16 changes and the bridge becomes unbalanced. The motor 21 then varies the resistance 17 to restore the balance. The resistance 17 is mounted on the edge of a disc on a spindle driven by the motor 21 as shown in Fig. 2. Rotation of this spindle simultaneously displaces the screen 10 by longitudinally displacing the spindle 27, the scale 26 not being displaced. Specification 537,551, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
