Abstract
537,410. Air-break switches; arc-rupturing in switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and ROBERTSON, A. T. Dec. 19, 1939, No. 32485. [Class 38 (v)] . An air circuit-breaker having parallel - connected sets of load-current carrying butt contacts, preferably all similar, has only one set provided with an arc shoot and arranged to make contact before, and break contact after. the other set or sets. Thus a narrower shoot and a more concentrated magnetic blow-out field can be employed, than in the case of a shoot extending over all the sets. For a range of breakers of given voltage and maximum rupturing capacity, the number of sets used depends on the normal load, numerical examples being given in the Specification. In Fig. 1, a number of contacts C, arranged one behind the other, are each mounted on a carrier D pivoted at B' to the base B and at D' to a common operating bracket E. For the necessary sequence of operation, the fixed contact A of the set associated with the shoot G projects further from the base, the contacts C being all capable of pivoting about D<2> against resilient pressure, for example as described in Specification 536,693, in which uniform contact pressure is obtained as the carriers move beyond their initial contact-making position.
