Abstract

537,244. Centrifugally operated friction clutch. PRITCHARD, N. J. Dec. 13, 1939, No. 32137. Convention date, Jan. 7. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] A windscreen wiper is driven at a substantially constant rate by a pulley engaging the fan driving belt or other driven element of the car engine, the pulley being caused to slip at speeds above a pre-determined maximum by the action of centrifugal arms. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the pulley comprises a drum part 50 engaging the fan belt 71 and fixed to the spindle 51 driving the wiper and a disc part 65 pivoted at 70 to a fixed bracket 56 and having a sleeve 52 in which the spindle 51 can freely turn. A spring rod 57 secured to a collar 56<1> on the sleeve presses the drum into contact with the belt. A ring 82 mounted on the sleeve 52 has a stud 63 projecting through a slot 64 in the disc 65 and connected by a strut 66 to the bracket 56. One or more weighted arms 75 pivoted to the drum 50 carry brake shoes normally free from the ring 82. Above a certain speed, however, the weighted arms swing onwardly causing the brake shoes to engage the ring 82. The torque applied to the ring thus tends to turn it about the stud 63 causing the whole assemblage to turn about the pivot 70 away from the belt 71. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the construction shown in Fig. 4 (Cancelled). In this form the pulley 7 is formed with an internal core 13 against which are pressed by a spring wire 18, arms 16 pivoted to a disc 14 fixed to a spindle 15 connected by a Bowden wire 19 to a suitable wiper-operating mechanism. Above a certain speed, the arms 16 swing outwardly and slip occurs between them and the cone 13. This speed may be adjusted by a screw 24 which varies the pressure of the arms on the core. The pulley is mounted on a pivoted arm 8 by which it may be moved into and out of contact with the fan driving belt. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
