[Class 97 (i)] A film gate comprises a movable member connected to a stationary member by a loose hinge connection having its axis parallel to the longitudinal edge of the film and comprising a hinge pintle mounted in a pair of brackets on one gate member and a pair of hinge lugs on the other member, the lugs having openings encircling the pintle which are elongated perpendicularly to the plane of the film so that the movable member is movable perpendicularly to this plane to compensate for variations in film thickness against the action of resilient means which also moves the movable gate member about the hinge axis to close the gate. In the form shown, the movable gate member carries a pair of hinge lugs 31 formed with the slots in which engages a hinge pin 29 carried by lugs 30 on the fixed gate member 15. A coil spring 24 mounted on a fixed post 25 is formed with a loop 28 which bears on the movable gate member and so tends to move it to the closed position, the loose hinge connection formed by the slots in the lugs 31 allowing the movable member to move perpendicularly to the plane of the film to compensate for variations in the film thickness. The movable member is held in the open position, Fig. 3, by a spring 33 secured to the objective sleeve 14 and formed with a slot in which engages a projection on the end of an arm 22 extending from the member. The fixed gate member carries two pairs of edge guides 17, 18 for the film, one of each pair of which may be resiliently mounted to press on the edge of the film. Inclined members 19 lead the edge of the film over the guides 17 when it is being inserted in the gate.
