Abstract

523,429. Wet separating processes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., GRIFFITHS, F. L., and MEYER, F. C. Jan. 6, 1939, No. 503. [Class 82 (ii)] Apparatus for the separation of materials of different specific gravities in a suspension of sand or the like, for example for cleaning coal, by methods of the type described in Specification 119,038, [Class 82 (ii)], comprises a conical vessel 1 having an overflow 3 at the top for the floating material, a discharge 4 at the bottom for the heavy material, and an intermediate tangential outlet 5 leading to a pipe 6 and adjustable weir 13. Water is admitted through jets 14 at two levels below the outlet 5 and at one level above, whereby the density of the suspension is maintained progressively greater from top to bottom. A rotary agitator 11 and jets 12 are provided whereby the middlings are directed to the outlet 5 and up the pipe 6, the floating material and middlings being delivered to separate compartments of a draining screen 8. In a modification, mechanical means such as an elevator may be provided in the pipe 6 instead of, or in addition to, the jets 12. U.S.A. Specifications 1,392,400 and 1,545,636 also are referred to.
