522,938. Bolting ; nuts. TINNERMAN, G. A. Aug. 15, 1939, No. 23504. [Class 89 (i)] A sheet metal fastener made by stamping from strip metal has thread engaging formations 12, 13, weakening notches 15 in the part that will form the shank portion, prongs 18 that spring out to engage the underside of the part 16 to be secured and prevent withdrawal of the fastener and ends 17 that form flanges acting as a head. On insertion the fastener takes the form Fig. 2, the notches 15 causing the shank to collapse as Fig. 3 when the screw is tightened. In a modification the thread engaging aperture is circular with a lateral slot that enables the edge of the aperture to be offset to helical form. Fig. 5 shows a modification with longer prongs 30 that are doubly bent to extend round the opening in the part 16. In a further modification the notches and prongs are omitted and the shank part of the strip is bent up substantially to circular form. Fig. 11 shows a further form of blank the projections 40 forming the head portion. In a modification disengagement by mere rotation in the opposite direction is rendered difficult by forming the thread-engaging portion of the fastener to a helical form different from that of the bolt, causing the fastener to cut into the bolt thread.
