Abstract
528,400. Telephone instruments. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 5, 1939, No. 13521. Convention date, May 5, 1938. [Class 40 (iv)] A ribbon diaphragm for a telephone transmitter or receiver comprises a portion of a single-layer multi-turn coil of fine wire bound into a ribbon, and preferably corrugated transversely. The coil may be wound on a rectangular former, and impregnated with a binder such as a cellulose cement thinned with amyl acetate and containing aluminium powder as a filler. One long side of the coil is then corrugated transversely to form the ribbon 17 and the other side and ends of the coil are slit as shown in Fig. 3, the parts 18, 19 serving, after shaping, to support the coil in the gap. In a modification for a double air gap, the two sides of the coil form the ribbon diaphragm, and the ends serve as supports, Fig. 6 (not shown). In Fig. 1, the air gap is formed between polepieces 15, 16 sandwiched between two pairs of permanent magnets 10, 11, 12, 13 with their like poles together. In Fig. 4, the two gaps are formed between pole-pieces 34, 35, 36 arranged between four pairs of magnets 30,31,32,33.
