[Class 37] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A float-operated variable resistance for controlling a liquid level indicator comprises a ball float 3 of metal or metallized wood or cork, which is normally out of contact with a resistance 4 but is movable laterally across the surface of the liquid into direct contact with the resistance by a vertical bar 9 pivotally mounted on links 11 and operated by an electromagnet 15. The float may be made entirely of insulating material and may co-operate with a series of spaced switches connected to the resistance. The bar 9 may be operated mechanically by a cam or Bowden wire ; alternatively the bar may be pivoted about a vertical axis and have a cam-shaped cross section or a circular cross section pivoted eccentrically.
