511,718. Alloys. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. April 19, 1938, No. 11742. Convention date, June 28, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82(i)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXVIII. An alloy suitable for uniting the steel parts of exhaust valves for internal combustion engines and if desired to form the seating surface has the percentage composition C 0.4 to 0.5, Mn 0.7 maximum, Cr 13 to 15, Ni 13 to 15, Si 0.7 to 0.8, P 0.03 maximum, S 0.03, and the remainder iron. Another alloy has the composition C 0.76, Mn 0.14, Cr 9.04, Si 0.63, Ni 33.17, B 1.87 and the remainder iron. This alloy melts at 2075‹F. can be cast centrifugally at from 2150‹ to 2200‹F. and provides a seating of hardness 35, Rockwell C scale. These figures may be increased to 2130‹F., 2250‹F., and 63 Rockwell by employing an alloy of composition C 0.38, Si 0.23, Cr 14.53, W 18.08, B 3.8 and the remainder iron. For valves operating at normal or low temperatures hard solder or spelter may be employed whilst aluminium bronze is suitable for moderate temperatures.
