Abstract

510,554. Timber buildings. KERR, W. H. Feb. 22, 1938, No. 5548. [Class 20 (i)] The timber carcase of a building comprises sleeper members 1, vertical posts 4 interfitting with, and fastened to, the sleeper members 1, rectangular frame units 5 fixed between the posts, roof trusses 6, each of which spans a pair of opposite posts and is arranged with its heels interfitted with, and fastened to, the upper ends of the posts, and crossed-type bracing 12 disposed between adjacent roof trusses. The floor comprises joists 3 disposed transversely across a plurality of parallel timber sleepers 1, each of which is supported by brick and/or concrete piers 2. The frame units 5, which are of timber, are fixed in position between the posts 4 so as to be flush with the inside edges of the posts and are secured at the bottom ends to the floor joists 3. The bottom ends of the posts 4 are notched to fit over the sleepers 1 and are rigidly secured in position by bolts, being preferably also fixed to the nearest convenient floor joist 3. The heels of the roof trusses 6 are cut away to fit over the bevelled upper ends of the posts 4 and V-shaped metal brackets 11 are fixed at the joists between the trusses and posts. The frame units 5 extend above the posts and are fixed to the trusses by bolts or other means. The trusses 6 are crossed-braced as shown at 7 and provided with posts 8. The cross-bracing members 12 between adjacent trusses 6 are fixed flush with the top of the rafter at the ridge and bottom, and these members are cross-halved and bolted together at their crossing points. A roof covering 15 is applied to purlins 14 secured to the bracing 12. The wall surface 19, which is flxed across the inside of the frame units 5, may be of the kind described in Specification 509,267.
