Abstract
517,781. Stuffing-boxes and substitutes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., RICHARDS, S. W., and WORRALL, H. Aug. 3, 1938, Nos. 22957 and 33993. [Class 122 (v)] A flame-proof packing gland is provided where the shaft 3 of an electromotor &c. leaves the casing 5 comprising a member 8, Fig. 1, located . by a roller &c. bearing 1 and providing flameproof paths 9, 11 between the member and the shaft and casing respectively. The member 8 is prevented from rotation by pins 13 in recesses of larger size allowing radial play and is pressed on to the casing by spring-pressed balls 15. A member 16 bolted on the member 8 provides another flame-proof path 17 around the shaft 3, the bearing lying between the paths 9, 17 and being supplied with oil by a filler 18. Fig. 2 shows a member 22 located by a ball bearing 24 on a collar 20 fixed to the shaft and recessed to receive a rim 23 on the member 22. This member provides flame-proof paths around the shaft and also in the faces of the casing 5 and end cover 6.
