Abstract

517,258. Aluminium phosphate pigments. BURGESS, A. F. (Paper Patents Co.). Oct. 25, 1938, No. 30827. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also 'in Group VIII] In the preparation of acidic or basic aluminium phosphate, double phosphate or alkali or alkaline earth-aluminium phosphate pigments for use in paper-manufacture, 1.-600 lbs. each of sodium and aluminium hydrates are boiled 20-30 mins. in 290 gallons of water until the solution is clear, diluted to 720 gallons with water and added slowly to 720 gallons of water to which separately, but at the same time, is added diluted phosphoric acid, alumium sulphate is then added to give pH=5 and the precipated filtered. II.-A solution of phosphoric acid in water is mixed with 720 lbs. of iron-free aluminium sulphate in 720 lbs. of water, and an aqueous suspension of calcium hydroxide (100 grams per litre) until pH rises to 5-5.2, and the calcium aluminium phosphate complex filtered. Phosphoric acid may be partially or wholly replaced by alkali phosphates, e.g., disodium phosphate, and oxides or carbonate may replace hydroxide of alkali or alkaline earth metals.
