Abstract
514,410. Manhole frames and covers. ELKINGTON, V. May 5, 1938, No. 13417. [Class 107] A manhole cover 6. such as the cover of an air-raid shelter, is horizontally displaceable to the open and closed positions by means operated from within the manhole, the cover being also movable by external means. The cover is a cast-iron ribbed frame, with concrete filling, and with teeth 12 on the underside, and is displaceable from below by the ratchet action on the teeth of a hand-lever 13 linked at 20 to the manhole frame. A bolt 21 locks the cover in closed position. The manhole frame has undercut ways on three sides to receive corresponding faces on the cover, but the fourth side 10 of the frame is inclined oppositely to the fourth side 17 of the cover, and a light loose cover 18 is inserted so as to be automatically ejected when the cover 6 is opened. The cover 6 is supported at its free edge, in closed position by a bar 16, and a gastight sealing is provided by greasing the horizontal seatings. The cover may be actuated from the outside by keys, which may be stored under the cover 18 when not required. The side guides are spaced a little more widely at the region occupied by the cover in the open position so as to reduce friction and facilitate the actuation of the cover.
