Abstract
503,794. Manufacture of ferrochromium. UDY, M. J. Oct. 13, 1937, No. 27896. [Class 82 (i)] A process for making ferrochromium from chromite ores in an electric furnace and using carbon to reduce both chromium and iron oxides, is characterized by introducing sufficient base (e.g. lime) with the charge of ore and carbon (e.g. coke) to form with the gangue present a slag having a molecular ratio of base to acid oxides between 2:1 and 4: 1, and allowing the temperature of the charge to rise above 1600‹ C. sufficiently to render the slag free running and tapping off molten ferrochrome. The carbon content may correspond to the usual grades viz. to 1À5-4 per cent, 4-6, and 6-10 per cent. An ore containing CaO replacing FeO as'described in Specification 437,008 may be used. Little or no " crust " is formed in the furnace and a single-phase or 3- phase furnace may be employed.
